As the Director of Cultural Equity and Belonging at the New England Conservatory of Music\, Monique is committed to creating and sustaining spaces of belonging that are culturally responsive and assets based.In her past position as Director of Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Program at Longy School of Music of Bard College\, Monique supported the Longy mission of preparing musicians to make a difference in the world. She oversaw Longy’s one-year music education credential program in Los Angeles\, that focused on music pedagogy\, performance\, and social justice. Monique has taught graduate level courses such as Historical and Social Foundations of Education\, Social Justice Music Research Project\, Culturally Responsive Teaching\, Non-profit Management\, and El Sistema-inspired Programming. She led presentations at universities such as CalArts\, Goshen College\, Luther College\, Clarke University\, Morehouse College\, Occidental College\, and Whittier College. \nMonique serves as the Vice Chair of the El Sistema USA national board. In this capacity\, she co-leads the ESUSA Equity-centered Pedagogy Working Group\, recently co-led ESUSA’s 5-year strategic planning process and serves on the Racial Diversity and Cultural Understanding Committee. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the Inter-generational Orchestra at Heart of LA (HOLA)\, an after-school El Sistema inspired youth program that partners with the LA Philharmonic to serve under-resourced youth with high quality music programs. Monique has been a panelist\, presenter or facilitator at conferences and organizations such as El Sistema USA\, Sphinx\, YOLA National\, YOLA at HOLA\, iTAC\, Global Leaders Program\, Global Arts\, Miami Music Project\, and From the Top. \nA graduate of the Sistema Fellows Program at the New England Conservatory of Music in 2013\, Monique explored the Venezuelan El Sistema music for social change program model. She then completed the Master of Arts in Teaching Degree at Longy School of Music of Bard College situated at the Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) at Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA). Returning to the HOLA family as Music Director just over a year later\, Monique was dedicated to activating student and community voice in addition to supporting students to achieve their best musically. The HOLA Music Program served over 275 youth\, and it was her greatest joy to lead this program. Monique has completed the Community Counselor Course through the Southern California Counseling center\, which uses social justice as the central lens through which to understand and support communities dealing with trauma and has been trained in Restorative Justice Councils (Talking circles). \nMonique is committed to deepening her impact as an arts education leader through culture building\, strategic visioning\, developing frameworks for educational and racial transformation\, training music teachers and teaching artists to embody Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies\, and creating brave and safe spaces where all can bring their full selves to the creative process. She is a “bridge-builder” and is passionate about exploring courageous dialogue that is at the intersection of inclusion\, access\, belonging\, collaboration\, socio-cultural awareness\, student voice and musical excellence.

Prior to that appointment\, he served as Dean of Enrollment and Aid at the Cleveland Institute of Music; Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management and Student Services at Roosevelt University’s College of Performing Arts in Chicago; Director of Music Admissions and Assistant Dean for Preparatory Programs at Ithaca College’s School of Music; Assistant Dean for Recruitment and Diversity at Louisiana State University’s College of Music and Dramatic Arts; and Assistant Dean for Recruitment and Outreach at the College of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Peterbark earned a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance with teacher certification (K-12) from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music in performance from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is co-author of “Caring for the Whole Student” in Sound Pedagogy: Radical Care in Post-Secondary Music (University of Illinois Press). He has presented on music admissions and recruitment at multiple NASM and NACAC convenings; lectured at the Aspen Music School; and has served as Monfort Professor in Residence at Colorado State University\, where he spoke on Black Pioneers in Music Performance. As a performer\, Peterbark sang in the NAXOS recording of William Bolcom’s “Songs of Innocence and Experience” which won four Grammy Awards in 2005 (Best Classical Album\, Best Choral Performance\, Best Classical Contemporary Composition and Producer of the Year\, Classical). \n			\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About Peter Slowik\n				Profiled by the Strad magazine as “a man of limitless energy and purpose – he mentors high achievers who make their mark in top positions the world over\,” Peter Slowik is one of the world’s most acclaimed artist-teachers of viola. He has been a featured performer and teacher at seven International Viola Congresses\, and has recorded on the Deutsche Grammophon\, deutsche harmonia mundi/BMG\, American Grammophone\, Erato and Cedille labels. Mr. Slowik has performed with William Preucil\, Anner Bylsma\, Leonard Rose\, the Mirecourt Trio\, the Jasper\, Arianna\, Saint Petersburg and Vermeer Quartets\, the Smithsonian Chamber Players\, and members of the Cleveland\, Chester\, Orford\, and Smithson quartets. Past orchestral associations include service as Principal Violist of the Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra\, Concertante di Chicago\, and the American Sinfonietta. Between 1986 and 1999 Slowik performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, and was solo violist at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has taught master classes in Australia\, Brazil\, Canada\, China\, England\, Europe\, New Zealand\, and most of the significant US conservatories Mr. Slowik is Professor of Viola at Oberlin Conservatory and Artistic Director for Credo Music. Past teaching posts include Northwestern University\, Indiana University\, the Cleveland Institute of Music\, and the Eastman School of Music. He has been named to the highest teaching awards at both Oberlin and Northwestern. Mr. Slowik was the recipient of the Maurice Riley Viola Award from the American Viola Society for “outstanding teaching\, scholarship\, and performance.” His viola and chamber music students have won first prize in numerous significant national and international competitions. Slowik students may be found in virtually every significant professional orchestra in the US (many serving in titled positions) and in leadership positions in universities and conservatories throughout the country.

With a decade of experience in higher education\, including eight years focused on Student Financial Services\, Ellen has developed a passion for helping students and families navigate the complex world of financial aid. As a third-generation Puerto Rican/Cuban and the first in her family to pursue a graduate degree\, she finds fulfillment in using her role to make a tangible difference in the lives of others\, ensuring students and families feel supported during what can often be an overwhelming process. \nEllen’s academic background in Psychology and English Literature informs her work\, blending analytical precision with a deep understanding of the human experience. She is an active member of several professional organizations\, including NYSFAAA\, NASFAA\, and EASFAA\, where she contributes to the ongoing discussions around financial aid policy and best practices. \nCommitted to giving back to her community\, Ellen regularly volunteers\, including performing at Bharati’s Foundation food drives in the Bronx and participating in the Thanksgiving Soup Kitchen at All Saints Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Outside of work\, she enjoys reading\, singing karaoke\, watching movies\, and presenting research on fairy tales—particularly *Beauty and the Beast*—at the Popular Culture Conference\, which she attended in 2019\, 2020\, and 2021.

He is a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, teacher\, arranger/composer\, and conductor\, and has performed and studied a wide variety of music from nearly all periods of the Western art music tradition\, rock\, and jazz on piano\, harpsichord\, lute\, recorder\, and voice. \nFrom 1991-2014 Walter taught in public and private schools in New York\, Florida\, and Nashville – from Kindergarten through 12th grade – in a broad array of music education formats including general music\, choir\, strings\, piano\, and music theory. He taught at alternative and progressive schools\, traditional college preparatory schools\, and a public arts magnet high school. He is Conductor Emeritus of Music City Youth Orchestra\, which he founded and directed from 2007 – 2012. \nAs an administrator\, his career spans ten years and two symphony orchestras: he was Director of Education & Community Engagement for the Nashville Symphony from 2014-2019\, where he established the award-winning pathways program Accelerando\, designed to prepare gifted young students of diverse backgrounds for pursuing music at the collegiate level and beyond. From 2019-2024 he served as Director/VP of Education & Community Engagement for the Richmond Symphony and established the Richmond Symphony School of Music online in 2020 to preserve the Richmond Symphony’s youth orchestra community through the global pandemic. In 2023 he launched the Richmond Symphony’s Youth Community Strings Program\, an El Sistema-inspired community impact program for students from Title I schools now in its second year of operations. \nWalter’s work as a music educator has always emphasized building community through music\, and he brings to his consulting work a long history of envisioning\, developing\, and successfully establishing new programs to meet community needs. Since 2016 he has served as an advocate for the development of pathways and equity programs in classical music\, sharing from his experience in a variety of formats and encouraging cooperation\, mentoring\, and advising. He has spoken about music\, education\, and diversity\, equity\, and inclusion at regional and national conferences\, and written extensively on these topics for national magazines\, professional associations\, and on his website Off The Podium at walterbitner.com.

As an educator\, she has taught in public schools and privately to students around the world. Her passion for expanding access to music education is at the core of her teaching philosophy.

He has recently served as the Dean of Enrollment Management and Aid at the Cleveland Institute of Music\, following many years as the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He also led admissions efforts at the Longy School of Music of Bard College and has provided enrollment management consulting to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has given numerous presentations on college admissions in the performing arts and has been a featured panelist at many conferences. He served as an adjudicator for Classical Singer\, NEC concerto competitions\, Boston Lyric Opera\, and VoicesBoston\, and has been on panels for hundreds of conservatory auditions. \nDr. Powell earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education at Boston University\, a Graduate Diploma in Vocal Performance at NEC\, a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at Belmont University\, and a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in History and Music at the University of Notre Dame. For twelve years\, Dr. Powell was a faculty member at Nashville State Community College\, specializing in innovative approaches to online music instruction. \nAs a professional musician\, Dr. Powell has performed throughout North America and Europe. As a long-time member of the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus\, he performed on numerous recordings and in live concerts at Boston’s Symphony Hall and Jordan Hall. He has sung with Philovox\, Orpheus Singers\, Boston Cecilia\, and Boston Secession\, and was a member of the London Symphony Chorus performing under Colin Davis\, Andre Previn\, and Richard Hickox. Dr. Powell completed the master course in poetry and performance at the Franz Schubert Institut in Austria where he worked with Elly Ameling\, Julius Drake\, and Wolfgang Holzmair. Dr. Powell was also the conductor of the Conservatory Chamber Choir at the Longy School of Music of Bard College.

Zach takes pride in “demystifying” the world of arts education for students\, families\, and communities. His music school brainstorming workshop\, “Average Boring Tuesday”\, has been presented in forums throughout the country. \nZach has the honor of serving as the Director of Admissions for the Boston University School of Music. He is also a proud member of Equity Arc\, and sits on the Board of Directors of the Music Admissions Roundtable\, a national organization uniting hundreds of collegiate music programs and the dedicated enrollment professionals who annually guide thousands of young musicians to further artistic study. Previously\, Zach was a member of the Enrollment team at New England Conservatory for six years\, has worked as a contract publicist for PARMA Recordings\, and formerly co-headed the arts marketing agency Promote Classical. \nTrained as a classical saxophonist\, Zach is the founding baritone saxophonist of the Pharos Quartet\, with whom he has performed all over the Northeast\, recorded\, taught masterclasses\, and commissioned new chamber works. \nZach holds the degree of Master of Performance (MPerf) from the Royal College of Music in London\, and the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts degrees\, both from Boston University. \nOutside of his administrative work\, Zach can be found cooking at home in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston\, and sourcing antique glass and housewares from all over the United States for his vintage shop\, Homaged (HomagedWares.com – if you’re curious!)

He has led organizations through uncertain times by building compelling cases for their futures\, refreshing programming and curriculums\, inspiring external and internal stakeholders\, adapting to changing environments with resolve\, adopting more equitable practices\, embracing media opportunities\, and enhancing local and international visibility. \nAs executive vice president and provost at the Cleveland Institute of Music\, Harrison’s portfolio of responsibilities includes the core mission of the institution: academic and student affairs\, enrollment and aid\, and artistic administration and operations. He serves as strategic and creative partner to President Hogle in fulfillment of his vision to boldly design the future of classical music in Cleveland. \nWorking closely with faculty and academic leadership\, Harrison and his team develop\, implement and assess forward-thinking initiatives to foster the musical\, intellectual\, community and artistic development of CIM’s students\, faculty and guest artists\, while enhancing the Institute’s capacity to prepare graduates for musical careers of distinction. Already during his short tenure\, he has strengthened relationships and expanded CIM’s footprint among its key partners\, including Case Western Reserve University\, The Cleveland Orchestra\, Cleveland Institute of Art and Cleveland Museum of Art; relaunched the Orchestral and Preparatory programs to meet the demands of CIM’s Second Century; and made several exciting appointments to the faculty to serve the evolving and diverse needs of CIM’s students. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About Espen Jensen\n				Director of Admissions and Financial Aid\nIndiana University Jacobs Scool of Music \nWith more than a decade of experience in higher education administration\, Jensen most recently served as associate director of admissions at the Jacobs School. His previous work at IU included academic advising in both the College of Arts and Sciences\, and University Division. \nHe has developed an active performance career\, appearing frequently as a solo and chamber musician in the United States and in his native country. In addition to collaborating with numerous artists\, he has released two solo CDs. \nJensen has also remained an avid educator\, particularly at the Jacobs School of Music’s Latin American Music Center\, where he led the Latin American Popular Music Ensemble. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About Dr. Crystal Sellers Battle\n				Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion; Professor of Music Leadership\nEastman School of Music \nDr. Crystal Sellers Battle previously served as the Dean of Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at Juniata College in Huntingdon\, PA before coming to Eastman in June 2022. In her role\, Crystal works to advance programs and policies that promote mindsets and behaviors that value and support equity\, diversity\, and inclusion. She co-founded DIEMA (Diversity\, Inclusion and Equity in Musical Arts) Consulting Group LLC\, to help schools of music address DEI related challenges and initiatives. She has presented to several groups around the country about DEI in music including the Northeastern Regional Conference of College Music Society. \nCrystal holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice performance with a specialization in Singing Health from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Music from Bowling Green State University\, a Master of Music degree from Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University and a Postgraduate Diploma from Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester\, UK. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About Dr. China Wilson\n				Assistant Dean of Diversity\, Equity\, and InclusionPeabody Institute \nDr. China L. Wilson currently serves as the inaugural Assistant Dean of Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. In this role\, Dr. Wilson provides strategic leadership to create and sustain a culture that embraces and promotes justice\, diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. As an initiative-taking\, committed\, and authentic leader\, Dr. Wilson has over 15 years of experience in a variety of areas including career counseling\, change management\, civil rights\, social justice\, public policy\, Title IX compliance\, diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI)\, and anti-racism. Dr. Wilson is also a former performing artist with professional vocal\, dance\, and theatre training and experience. \nMost recently\, she served as the Equity and Civil Rights Compliance Specialist at the Maryland State Department of Education. In this position\, she oversaw and provided statewide leadership\, technical assistance\, and guidance to colleges on a federal civil rights monitoring program that evaluated the equity\, access\, and program quality of college programs. Additionally\, she co-created and facilitated a professional learning series to help college leaders set the stage for equity\, conduct a percentage-point gap analysis using institutional data\, identify growth opportunities for DEI\, conduct root cause analysis\, and create plans of action. \nPreviously\, she led a department at Trinity Washington University serving students from various underrepresented groups. She developed effective programs\, policies\, and services to address barriers students faced because of race\, gender\, ethnicity\, low income\, or immigration status. During her tenure\, she integrated anti-oppression frameworks to strengthen student academic participation\, progression\, and performance and unprecedentedly increased the usage of services\, partnerships\, and advocacy for underrepresented students. \nAs an inner-city\, first-generation college student\, Dr. Wilson knows first-hand the issues faced by many underrepresented students and it is her mission to use her personal and professional experiences to advance equitable learning for all students. Dr. Wilson earned her Ph.D. in Educational Management from Hampton University and takes pride in the role she plays to create strategic partnerships that promote the development of holistic programs and policies that mitigate and resolve issues around diversity\, equity\, and inclusion. Dr. Wilson contributes to the core principles of higher learning in ways that redound to the benefit of communities locally\, nationally\, and globally and is frequently called upon by multiple outlets to discuss her work in the community. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About Tiffany Wright\n				Deputy General CounselJohns Hopkins University \nTiffany R. Wright joined the Office of the Vice President and General Counsel as Deputy General Counsel in May 2023. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins\, Ms. Wright served as Associate Counsel to the President in the Office of the White House Counsel. In that position\, she provided strategic and legal advice to the President\, Vice President\, and senior White House advisors on a wide array of legal issues\, including Title IX\, gender and LGBTQ+ equity\, reproductive rights\, clemency\, and religious liberty. \nPrior to her White House service\, Ms. Wright directed the Civil Rights Clinic at the Howard University School of Law\, and practiced in the Supreme Court and Appellate practices at two international law firms. She served as a law clerk to Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the U.S. Supreme Court\, Judge David S. Tatel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit\, and Judge Royce C. Lamberth on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. \nMs. Wright earned her law degree\, magna cum laude\, from the Georgetown University Law Center\, and completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland at College Park. DESCRIPTION:Although Summer Study plays a transformative role in a classical musician’s journey\, the expenses can be cost-prohibitive. To address this gap\, Equity Arc created the Common Application for Summer Study which allowed musicians of color to submit one application at no cost to 14 partner summer study programs. Each partner committed to providing at least one full-tuition scholarship to an Equity Arc fellow. \nNow that the 2023 application process is complete\, we are thrilled to share the outcomes of this revolutionary program.
